We are in the very early stages of a new macro regime, and investors need to adapt.

In the second installment of our two-week special, How To Unf*ck Your Future series, Dario Perkins explains why he thinks we’re leaving behind the regime of the past 50 years and currently entering a new multi-decade supercycle.

The Managing Director for Global Macro at TS Lombard tells Roger Hirst that we’re in the very early stages of a new macro environment where the stock market will start to reflect the economy a little bit more and where the balance of power between labor and capital in the economy is tilted toward labor.

In his view, that means it will require a lot more effort for investors to eke out returns. Recorded on Friday, March 3, 2023.

More Fuel For The Inflation Fire

The jury is out on whether massive government spending in response to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to today’s inflation.

However, as politicians stare down a potential recession, they face a critical dilemma: by stimulating growth will they also further stimulate prices?

Dario Perkins, the managing director of global macro at TS Lombard, joins Real Vision’s Andreas Steno Larsen to talk about the consequences of the European energy crisis, including a vicious cycle of expansionary fiscal policy that would only exacerbate existing systemic problems. Perkins also shares his thoughts on the “romance” with Modern Monetary Theory and describes what he considers a “true” recession. Recorded on August 18, 2022.

Video Title

Dario’s views of the global economy’s structure and how the next decade plays out are very different from those of most observers.

He thinks the 1970s analog is the wrong one to look at and that the postwar decades, the 1940s and the 1950s, provide a better framework. At the same time, he foresees a move toward a “tangible economy” and away from the “intangible economy” of the 2010s. In a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion, Dario and Raoul talk about the ramifications of this transition for inflation, growth, and interest rates.

Recorded on May 12th, 2022.
