History Doesn't Repeat Itself, But It Often Rhymes

From the beginning of the pandemic, investors have been scrambling for historical parallels to help predict the market’s direction.

But Jamie Catherwood, who studies the history of finance and publishes the popular blog Investor Amnesia, says the real value of studying history is to learn how to avoid psychological traps.

Speaking to Real Vision’s Maggie Lake, he encourages investors to stop “anticipating” every Federal Reserve meeting or Consumer Price Index print, which he says invariably leads to overtrading. Jamie also looks at multiple-expansion data over the last century to show how the equity market is becoming increasingly speculative.

He cautions against buying stocks with “flashy narratives,” reminding viewers of the essential rule of investing: fundamentals matter. Recorded on September 1, 2022.
