Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has nothing to do with NATO or with visions of Russia’s grandeur.

According to longtime Vladimir Putin critic Bill Browder, the CEO of Hermitage Capital and head of The Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign, it boils down to the fact that Russia’s president “is a criminal, he is a kleptocrat” and is “trying to create a distraction, a foreign enemy” so that the Russian people don’t turn on him.

In conversation with Marko Papic, a partner and chief strategist at Clocktower Group, Browder pieces together a picture of who Putin really is and explains why he can’t afford to lose the war with Ukraine.

Browder and Papic explore the big questions about the conflict in Eastern Europe: Does it mark the beginning of World War III? Will China come to Russia’s aid? And must the West become more aggressive in its approach to stopping Putin?
